Arts and Crafts Circle Annual Meeting
“As 1939 will see the opening of the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington, it is the wish of the president and committee, that each member will do some special work for the women’s section,” the annual report of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the Pioneer Club, Wellington, stated. The annua! meeting, held yesterday afternoon in the club rooms, was well attended and plans for the year's activities were made. Committee meetings had been held regularly, continued the report, and the circle membership had increased. Two raffles bad been organized, prizes being given by Mrs. H. Hansen and Mrs. M. Whitt. In June, Miss Boyd organized a “white elephant sale,” the help of members, which resulted, with the guessing competitions, in the sum of £2O being raised. In July, all those who had helped to make this sale a success, were entertained to afternoon tea. The annual exhibition in November was opened by Miss Kane, who congratulated members on the very fine display. During the year Mrs. Mitchell, circle president, convened a • meeting for all those interested in exhibiting at the Centennial Exhibition, and many promises of handwork were given. The follow-ing gave demonstrations during the year:—Mrs. McLauchlan, felt work; Mrs. M. Whitt, felt work and china painting; Miss Cook, illuminating and printing; Mrs. E. L. Fink, dressing jackets; and Mrs. J. Murray showed dolls which she had collected on her trip abroad. The usual Christmas party in December was attended by practically all members. At this party Mrs. C. W. Mack was welcomed home, and during the afternoon she gave a talk on the highlights of a Continental tour. A donation was given to the Red Cross Hospital, and a total of £26/13/6 raised for the refurnishing fund. The report mentioned the death of Mrs. G. Butler, for many years an active member, who was greatly missed by all members. The officers elected for the year were: President, Mrs. A. Mitchell; life members, Mesdames L. Roskruge, sen., F. E. H. Martin, W. Duncan, C. Batten, C. Street; honorary member, Mrs. M. Whitt; vice-presidents, Mesdames E. Fink, W. E. Hay-Mackenzie, and Miss A. Boyd; secretary, Miss V. Dawson; committee, Mesdames C. Short, J. Foster, B. Haines, and Nichol. A pewter jewel case inlaid with paua shell, hand polished, with brush and mirror to. match, aud a toilet set of renscoe work with french barbola motifs were displayed as examples of work members would be undertaking during the year. Afternoon tea was served at a long table decorated with bowds of late summer flowers.
Personalities on Board. Interesting personalities met while on board were described in the course of a travel talk, “A Tour in the Empress of Britain,” by Mrs. C. W. Mack, on Wednesday night. The talk was given, at the conclusion of the annual meeting of the “Every Other Wednesday” Circle of the Pioneer Club, Wellington. Among the listeners were Mrs. E. J. Moore, Mesdames J. L. Garrard, E. Fink, D. Anderson, H. Hansen Sinclair, W. Duncan, M. E. Gillman, F. Vosseler, and Misses R. Harvey, Guilfoyle, Hilda Taylor, Jessie Forsyth, Claire aud Vera Dawson.
