FINE OF £7 IMPOSED
Desertion From Overseas Steamer “This is one of the eight men who deserted from the Maimoa,” said a shipping company representative in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, when Charles Keir McAnulty, fireman, aged 35, pleaded guilty before Mr. J~. H. Luxford, S.M., to deserting from the overseas steamer Maimoa. at Wellington, on January 28. A fine of £7 was imposed. “Is there anything you wish to say,” the magistrate asked accused. McAnulty: Yes, I wish to say conditions in the ship are no good. The magistrate: You know the procedure prescribed for making complaints? Accused: Complaints were no good iu ’that ship. The magistrate said this was no excuse for desertion. The law had made provision for seamen wishing to make complaints. Accused was allowed time in which to pay the fine.
