Final Carnival Of Season Tonight F. GREENEM’S DIVING Oriental Bay Gala Day On Saturday (By Tkuuge.i I'lie lae-t swimming carnival of the season in Wellington, postponed from last week, will be held in Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt, tonight, beginning at 7.45. Five Wellington centre cluimpioiie'liips will be decided —100yds. senior backstroke, 100yds. women’s freestyle, 440yds. men’s freestyle. 100yds. intermediate boys and 100yds. intermediate girls. There will aDo be a 220yds. A grade interclub handicap race, 100yds. B grade, 100yds. breaststroke, a water polo match, Wellington v. the Rest, and a troupe of fancy divers.

Greenem’s Diving. A polished display of diving was given by F. Greenem at the girl guide swimming sports in Riddiford Baths on Saturday afternoon. Greenem’s performance was the best seen in Wellington since the French diver Poussaird performed in the same baths a few years ago. Mr. N. N. Oltiershaw, s-ecretarj- of the Wellington Swimming Association, spoke very highly of Greenem’s displays. To see him perform dives such as on Saturday and then fail to repeat then?.

The V.M.C.A. Swimming and Surf Life-saving Club will close its 1938-3 J season on Saturday afternoon with a beach gala and life-saving event for the Dr. Montgomery Spencer trophy on Oriental Bay beach, near, the biUhing pavilion, beginning nt 2 o’clock. _ There will be a number of events to interest all club members as well as beach and water events for children. The principal item will be the life-saving competition for the club president’s trophy. In this competitors are required to swim, dressed as for award of merit (fully clothed except for coat and shoos), a distance of 100 yards from the bench to a buoy. Here the competitor receives a patient and tows him ashore by two different methods. The patient, wearing swimming costume, must bo approximately the same weight as the competitor. The present holder of the trophv is S. Breach. Entries close today.

Water Folo. The Wellington water polo competitions have. concluded. 'The A grade champions are Lyall Bay A, who played consistently good polo throughout the season. The B grade title was won by the promising young Maranui team, and the C grade by 'Wellington. Wellington has the largest number of teams for any centre throughout the Dominion.

Promising Long-distance Swimmer. Last Saturday’s cross-harbour swim in 'Wellington unearthed a promising long-distance swimmer in K. Lane, who plugged through the choppy sea with great determination and came out of the water at the finishing flag almost ns fresh as when he dived in from Pipitea Wharf. Lane swam a strong crawl stroke throughout the distance . It was a great test of stamina. He is concentrating on long-distance swimming, and will prove a strong member of the Y.M.C.A. team next term

Titahi Bay Surf Club. The final surf gathering of the Wellington season will be held on Sunday, when the Titahi Surf Club will conduct a surf carnival on Titahi Bay beach.
