SCHOOL EVACUATED
Condition Of Masterton West Building DIRECTION BY MINISTER Dominion Special Service. MASTERTON. March 15. The Masterton West School, which was opened in 1920, was vacated today by direction of the Minister of Education, Mr. Fraser. A report that the building badly needed strengthening and the position required investigation was submitted by the Public Works Department engineers in October, and two weeks ago an independent source confirmed the report. The condition of the building was probably brought about by earthquake, as in the case of the Lansdowne school.
Standard classes were transferred today to temporary quarters at Wairarapa College. Two classrooms in the north wing and a staff room are being used for standards four, five and six; standards one. two and three are being accommodated in the rear of the assembly hall. Two portable classrooms will be brought to Masferton from Hutt Central school in about three weeks for the use of the standards. Primer classes remain in a wooden annexe separated from the old reinlorced concrete building at the West School.
