Madrid Communists Still Hold Out
CENTRE OF CITY BACK TO NORMAL (Independent Cable Service.) (Received March 14, 9.30 p.m.) MADRID, March 14. Though the Defence Council apparently has full control of the city, the Communists are holding the outer suburbs, where heavy fighting was reported at midnight.
Many of General Casado’s tanks were trapped in pits and then set on fire with bottles of petrol. The crews were burnt to death.
In the city itself the republicans loyal to the Defence Council claim that normal conditions have been nearly restored. Tramway and underground train services have been started again, and cinema programme. 1 } and banking business have been resumed. The. food queues have reappeared after three breadless days. COMMUNIST HOARD Discovery In Millionaire’s Former Home (Received March 14, 7.30 p.m.) MADRID, March 14. After the expulsion of the Communists from the former home of the millionaire, Senor Juan March, the police discovered a hoard of art treasures, rind money believed to be the proceeds of confiscations carried out by the Communists early in the war. All are being handed oyer to the Defence Council.
