AWAPUNI GALLOPS
Horses For Trenthani In Action
Dominion Special Service.
PALMERSTON N„ March 14,
More than usual interest was taken in the Awapuni track work this morning because many of the horses hold important engagements at Trentham. The going was greatly benefited by recent rains, though another good downpour is needed to put the tracks in the right order for the hurdlers.
All continues to go well with Ecstatic. With Tattersall in the saddle she strode nicely over five furlongs in 1.6 3-5. the first three in 38.
Copy Cat (P. Rae), under restraint, registered 191 over five furlongs. The Bigot (Tattersall) held a slight advantage over Laughing Lass (Broughton) at the finish of seven furlongs in 1.36, the first half in 52 2-5. They are well attuned for coming engagements. Royal Choice was given useful work on the plough. Newbury Queen (Broughton) was accompanied by La Bru (Tattersall) in a four-furlong sprint which occupied 52 1-5. They finished full of running.
White Gold (Ireland) reeled off seven furlongs in 1.364, the first half in 54. She moved attractively throughout. Tangled, looking in good heart for the jumping business, worked on the plough. Catalogue and Conveyer were exercised on the grass track. Catalogue is now allowed to put more dash into his work. Aurora's Star (Temperton) ami Colonel Bogey (Broughton) finished a length in front of Cuisinicr (Tattersall) over six furlongs in 1.21 2-5.
Beaupartir and Old Bill.
Beaupartir (Ireland) and Old Bill (Tattersall) traversed a mile in 1.504. the first six in 1.24 3-5. Both horses are in the pink of condition and will be hard to keep out of the money.
Golden Ridge (W. Jenkins) appeared Io be running on more solidly than Yed Prior (Broughton) in a seven-furlong gal lop in 1.36 1-5. Yed Prior, however, is making excellent progress.
Brazil (Ireland) finished in front of Corroboree (Stewart) over six furlongs in 1.20 4-5, the first half in 54. It was a very satisfactory gallop. Old .Surrey (Broughton) and Lady Ina (Jenkins) pleased by the resolute fashion in which they went seven furlongs, which occupied 1.36. the first half in 53J. Moradabad and Caution left five furlongs behind in 57 1-5. They finished with a lot: in reserve. Thrasos (Anderson) was too smart for Taumau (Ireland) in a run over a mile, the first six in 1.23}. Dainty Sue (Jenkins) galloped very freely over seven furlongs in 1.354, the first four in 55. Dainty Sue looks well. She will be raced at the Manawatu meeting.
Bumble (Ireland) was accompanied by Sudan (Broughton) in n mile gallop covered in 1.50 3-5, the last seven in 1.37. _ Millament, who was given useful exercise, will have her next outing at the Manawatu meeting. N. C. Trillo is riding in work again and has applied for his licence. I. Rohloff, the well-known hurdle rider, has taken up residence in Palmerston North. As he is a capable horseman he should not want for mounts during the winter campaign.
DEATH OF MR. M. DOOLEY
Dominion Special Service.
INVERCARGILL, March 14
Mr. Michael John Dooley, whose death occurred yesterday after a brief illness, was a well-known and popular figure in racing circles in Otago and Southland. Mr. Dooley was an enthusiastic owner, and in recent years he raced The Chaser, Red Lance, and Grand Finale, though it is understood that he gave Grand Finale away just a few days before his death for use as a hack. His most important success with Grand Finale was in the Wyndham Cup three years ago. Mr. Dooley enjoyed a wide popularity and the sympathy of friends will be extended to his widow and son, .Mr. Jack Dooley, the well-known Wingatui jockey.
