PLANS FOR SMOKE SCREEN

Not To Run In Thompson Handicap Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, March 14. Smoke Screen will not be a starter in the Thompson Handicap, but is to be reserved for the N.Z. Challenge Stakes on the second day. This announcement has been made by D. Marks, the Fordell trainer, and is timely seeing that Smoke Screen was likely to be a warm public favourite. Taurangi. in the same stable, has done well since Bulls, where troubles peculiar to her sex prevented her from doing her best. Fit and well on Friday her connexions look to I his* filly to run a good race in the mile event. Conditions were favourable this morning for Wanganui horses engaged at Trentham Io do their final gallops before leaving. No. 1 grass track was open for fast work.

Submission (W. Rayner) and Homily (F. Latham) went five furlongs together. They cut out the fir«t furlong in 12 1.-5, the. quarter in 24 4-5, and three furlongs in 37 2-5, Submission being a head in front at the post. Submission was going very freely, but Homily was not doing her best. They are both in great fettle and should rim well in their engagements at Trentham and Awapuni. Entail, with his trainer in the saddle, trotted a circuit and then ran a mile in 1.46 1-5, swinging along easily. Darthura and Eurotas were associated in a sprint over three furlongs, which they left behind in 37 2-5. They had another run over the same distance, Darthura staying on the better to register 3Sj. They are likely to run at Awapuni next week. W. Rayner will leave for Trentham tomorrow with Submission, Entail, and Homily.

After breakfast Amigo was given a run over six furlongs, but was not asked to do his host, taking 1.5 for the first furlong and 1.17 4-5 for the full journey. However, he is in capital order. So far nothing definite is known as to which event Amigo will contest on Friday, but his owner-trainer is anxious to start in the Thompson Handicap if a suitable rider can be obtained.

NOITARO RUNS FAST FIVE

Paeroa Candidates Work At Te Rapa Dominion Special Service. HAMILTON, March 14. A smart five furlongs by Noituro and three by the two-year-old Wyndora, wore features of this morning’s work at 'Te Rapa, when the course proper 40 feet out from the rails provided fast going. The best figures of the morning over five furlongs were those of Noitaro (Long), who ran the distance in 1.4 2-5, the first three furlongs in 36 4-5, and the half-mile in 51 fl-5. She is to contest. the open sprint on the first day at Paeroa and is not without prospects. The Ohinemuri Cup candidate, Master Brierly (McKenzie), after working once

round at half-puce, ran seven furlongs lazily in 1.37 1-5, hie first half-mile | occupying 5(1. He looks in good order. Foxsen (Thomson) and Midland (Long) dashed to the half-mile in 52 4-5, doing their work well over the concluding stages. Dark Shadow (McLaughlin), who is looking healthy, ran half a mile from the three to the seven-furlong barrier in 531. Respectful (McLaughlin) and Calorie (Goulsbro) hit out together over seven furlongs. They ran their first half-mile in 54 1-5, five furlongs in 1.8, six in 1.21, and the full distance in 1.344. It was a useful effort on the part of both horses, who should strip well when required to race. Sergia (Thomson) and Forest Lake (Gollop) were associated over seven furlongs, cutting out the full distance in 1.35 1-5, the first half-inile in 53}. The two-year-old Wyndora (Ensor) ran right away from Princess Lu (Telford) and Miss Rangi (Goulsbro). over three furlongs in 374. Wyndora has shown speed on the track and may open her winning account soon. A smart five furlongs was credited to Tosh (Watson), who was doing better than Lornacre (Gilmer) and Ngawiri (Goulsbro), over the deciding stages of the trial in 1.4 4-5. Tosh ran his first

three furlongs in 45 4-5, and the halfmile in 511. Tosh seldom looked better than he does just now, and should make a bold showing among the sprinters at Paeroa. Lornacre looks improved as a result of his outing at Pukekohe and as he is. usually a lazy track worker his showing this morning was encouraging. Riding engagements for the Ohinemuri meeting include:—N. R. McKenzie, Master Briefly, Games, Mintlaw: H. Long, Gay Rebel. Lornacre; C. L. Goulsbro, Rothoon; J. McLaughlin, Starbright: W. M. Thomson, Poland, Sergia. Very Glad and Trig Station (second day). J. Winder has lodged an appeal with the Auckland District Committee against the two months’ suspension imposed on
