CLAN MACKAY

First Social Of The Year The Clan Mac Kay Society, Wellington, met for their first social evening for 1939 in the U.S.A. Hall, Victoria Street, on Saturday night. There was a record attendance of members and friends. Mr. Duncan Mac Kay presided. Mr. J. G. MacKenzie, chairman of the Wellington Scots’ Association, outlined the objects of the New Zealand "Black Watch” Regiment. The society had previously decided to give the movement its support by assisting members who joined the regiment. Mr. MacKenzie said that n few members had already enrolled, and -it. was pleasing to note that the Bluck Watch tartan was somewhat similar to that of Mac Kay. During the evening songs were sung by M-s. R. Marchand (“Wiata Poi” and "We’d Better Bide a Wee”), Mrs. Nettie Mac Kay (“I Heard You Singing ), Mr. Gordon Mac Kay ("The Lass of Ballochmyle and “The Eriskay Love Lift”)Operatic and toe dances were given by Miss Meta McKenna; Highland dances by Master Keith Muir; skipping dance and tap dance by Miss Dawn Sargent; Spanish dance and tap dance, Master Ralph Wilkin; selections of Irish jigs, straspeys and reels by Mr. G. Gunn (violin), and Mrs. E. B McGowan (piano); bagpipe selections by Miss Grade Mac Kay. The items were interspersed with dancing. The accompanists for the evening were Mrs. E. B. McGowan (piano accordion), and Misa M. Oates. Bagpipe music for the Highland dances was played by Miss G. Mac Kay. Several new members were enrolled.
