OBITUARY

Mr. F. S. Wood The death occurred suddenly yesterday morning of Mr. Frank S. AVood, at the age of 56, says a AVestport Press Association message. He was a leading business man, a member of the Progress League, and a former borough councillor. Mr. Wood had held I high office in the Masonic Grand Lodge’. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, and three sons. Mr. John McNair ' The death has occurred of Mr. John McNair, who retired from the position of district engineer in Christchurch last year, at the age of 6-1, says a Press Association message. From 1909 to 1914 Mr. McNair was assistant engineer in Invercargill, and he was then transferred to Duuedin, where he remained till 1922. He was then sent to Auckland as assistant engineer in February, 1924. He was appointed district engineer in Invercargill, and after a short period there he was transferred to AVanganni. Mr. McNair returned to Christchurch as district engineer in September, 1925. He was an associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers (London) and a member of the New Zealand Society of Engineers. Mr. R. A. HoAvie The death Ims occurred of. Mr. IL A. Howie, barrister and solicitor, AVanganui, after a short illness, says a -Dominion” Special Service message. He was born in AVaverley, the youngest son of Mr. Alexander Howie. lie did not have the advantage of a secondary education, but by determination and hard work he bridged the gap between primarv school and Aictoria University College. Having qualified as a barrister and solicitor, he entered the office of a AVellington firm to gain practical experience. More than 20 years ago he went to AVanganui and shortly afterward started practice on his own account. He wirs a member of the AVanganui Tennis Club, which he represented on many occasions. He also represented Victoria University College at tennis and played in the first Rugby fifteen as well as in club football in Wellington. He was a member of the Belmont Golf Club and took keen interest in the game. He was president of the AVangirnui Law Society for a term. .Air. Howie was also a member of the AVanganui Choral Society, in which he held the offices of both president and secretary for many years.

He leaves a widow, two sons, Messrs. P. .1. Howie (AVanganui) and A. G. Howie (Wellington), and two daughters, Misses Barbara and Helen Howie (AVanganui). The Magistrates’ Court, AVanganui, will not sit till 10.45 atm. today, so as to allow members of the legal profession to attend the funeral.
