W. N. Binnie’s Fine Record W. N. Binnie, captain of the Otago Rowing Club, arrived from Dunedin yesterday to reside in Wellington, He will probably join two former clubmates. Irvine Love and Alan Clouston, and row for the Wellington club. Binnie has an enviable record as an oarsman. He joined the Otago elub in 1929. and won his first race in the 193031 season when he rowed No. 2 in the maiden fours at Ravensbourne. Later that season he stroked the youths’ pair which won at Queenstown. His record in following seasons is as follows: —193132: Youth’s double sculls, Queenstown j interclu'b eights. 1932-33 : Junior fours, Waihola and Portobello. 1933-34: Junior fours, Dunedin, St. Leonards and Queenstown; junior double sculls, Queenstown. 1934-35: Senior fours, Queenstown. 1935-36: Senior double sculls, Macandrew Bay. 1936-37 : Senior fours, Macandrew Bay and Bluff. 193738: Senior fours, Oamaru and St. Leonards; senior double sculls, Macandrew Bay. In addition he won seven club races during the years given above. This season Binnie had considerable success as stroke of the club’s senior four and eight-oared crew. Binnie was elected to the dub’s committee in 1932, and in 1935 he was appointed deputy-club captain. At the beginning of this season he took over the captaincy on the retirement of J. I’. Vallis after three years’ service. Binnie made his debut in interproyineial rowing in 1936. when he represented Otago in the crew which defeated Southland in the Edmond Shield race that season. He also wore the Otago colours in 1937 and 1938. Again this season Binnie was a member of the crew which defeated Southland, and his form assured him of a seat in the crew for the interprovincial championship at Easter. INTERPROVINCIAL EIGHTS Union Crew To Defend Trophy For Wanganui By Telegraph—Press Association. ■WANGANUI, March 12. Wanganui will be represented in the annual interprovincial eight-oar race for the Halliburton Johnstone bowl at Dunedin by the Union Boat Club's eight, which holds the New Zealand eight-oar championship, Wanganui are the present holders of the trophy, winning the event last year when represented by the Union crew.
