A SURPRISE VISIT

Birthday Celebrations For Miss Barbara Phelan

Ninety young people paid a surprise visit to Aliss Barbara Joyce Phelan on Saturday night, the occasion being Aliss Phelan’s birthday. Planned with all the secrecy of a genuine “surprise,” and organized by Aliss Bobbie Hope Gibbons and Aliss Beverley Luke, the party went merrily and all too quickly, from start to finish. Aliss Phelan arrived home from a dinner party to find her guests awaiting her, laden with ' parcels. Her mother, Airs. Al. G. Phelan, who was “in the know,” had decorated the lounge with lovely salmon shaded gladioli aud carnations, and the drawing room with asters. She wore a smart hostess gown of black, with sequin sleeves. The guest of honour was also in black, of georgette with a coloured sequin yoke. Aliss Hope Gibbons chose black taffeta, and Miss Luke brown cloque. Lots of singing helped to make the evening go with a ‘‘swing,” and all the latest dances, including the Lambeth Walk, were enjoyed to piano aud gramophone accompaniment. Among the surprise visitors were Mr. and Airs. Jack Phelan, Air. and Airs. F. Lonsdale, Air. and Airs. Al. Toomey, Mr. and Airs. K. Ainsley, Airs. John Blake, Airs. Alarsh, Alisses J. Aloodie, H.
