TARANAKI STAKES
Win For Smoke Screen PLAY ON’S HANDICAP Hain On Pinal Day Dominion Special Service. NlffW PLYMOUTH, March 11. The Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting was concluded at New Plymouth today in showery weather which had the effect of cutting up the track. However, while it v,-as slippery in patches, it did not provide bad going, th? Stakes being run in 1.1.5. and the open sprint, about seven furlongs, in 1.27. Smoke Screen scored a stylish win in the Taranaki Stakes from Oratory. Play On, appreciating the easier ground and also getting a much better run than he did in the Taranaki Cup. won the Paul Memorial Handicap. The sprint, race saw the promoted hack To Huia lead all the way and defeat the favourite, Russian Ballet. In spite of the unfavourable weather there was a largo attendance and the totalizator investments were always better than they were fur the corresponding races on the second day last year., lhe total for the day was £22,588. making an aggregate turntiyer for the meeting of £41.009. an increase of £12,307 on the 193 S total of £25,701/10/-. Hurdles to Red Sun.
Disturbed, the first, day winner, was not. allowed to get so far away from his field in the Okoke Hurdles. He went to the front six furlongs from home, but Red Sun set after him and had collared him before reaching the home turn. Red Sun moved over to the inside running and had the race won at the last fence, going on to score by four lengths from Disturbed. Wynard'o, who lost his position in the first half-mile, came on well again at the end and was .third, six lengths behind Disturbed. Booklaw, well up early, was a poor fourth, and tho other three runners were well beaten. Ohanga, the favourite, hung out for most of the journey and gave his backers a poor run. , Another for Fiancee. The Awakino Hack Handicap, for maidens at time of entry, was won by the Siegfried filly Fiancee, who cane rfii very solidly at tile close to run down Lc Marquis and win easily by three lengths. Fiancee began well and ran on terms with Dawn Star to the. home turn, where Gitana I.ass and Le Marquis also joined in. Dawn Star was beaten when they straightened up, and Le Marquis and Fiancee quickly drew out. Fiancee had Le Marquis’s measure half a furlong.from the post and won with ease. Gitana Lass just beat the fast-finishing Young Charles, who was having his second race only, ilarmody, who was last at the half-mile, came on well at the end to finish fifth. An Outsider Succeeds. Golden Orchid, who won the Mokau Hack Handicap, scored her first win for a year. She and Nereus were in charge at the home turn, but Golden Orchid finished a little too well for Nereus and beat him by half a length. Te Morehu, the win favourite, received a elight check on the fence when Golden Orchid passed him running in to ,the turn into the (straight, and this cost him a winning chance. He finished well, failing by a head only to catch the second horse. Race Camp, who ran up smartly to join the leaders at the home turn, hung out in the run down the straight and was a close fourth, only a neck from Nereus. Karere-Nui, the first day winner, was beaten at the last furlong. where Mischel also dropped out of the struggle. Smoke Screen Wins Stakes. The twenty-fifth Taranaki Stakes was won comfortably by the favourite, Smoke Screen. He was allowed to run a couple of lengths behind the pacemakers, Oratory and Olympus, to the distance, where he came along on the outside and very quickly settled the claims of his four opponents beating Oratory home by a length. Race Call, who rim with Smoke Screen all the way, was two lengths away third and Olympus tired into fourth place. Varimond could not handle the slippery going and was last all. the way. Smoke Screen looked in beautiful order and won stylishly. The race will tune him up nicely for the Trentham meeting next week, where he is engaged in the Thompson Handicap and North Island Challenge Stakes. Play On's Handicap. Play On. with the benefit of a seven pounds allowance and an easier track, had the Paul Memorial safely in keeping over the final furlong and a half. Taitoru took charge some distance from home, but he was called on to answer several challenges when he reached the home turn, where Play On and Rustem were both well placed. At the distance post Play On was going like a winner, and he had a length and a half to the good at the post. Rustem had to be ridden hard to beat Taitoru by a neck for second, and Namara was a close fourth. Tahurangi. who was third two furlongs from home, dropped out when the pressure went on, and the favourite, Cheval de Volee, compounded soon after passing the half-mile. Play On ran a fair race in the Taranaki Cup, but the ground was a little firm for him and he once again showed that he is all the better for a race. Close Finish in Juvenile.
The two-year-old race provided a very close finish in which the favourite Fils de Vaals, came home brilliantly wide out on the track to head off Mountain Fox and Kriemhild in the Inst stride. Kriemhild and Race Away were five lengths out clear of the field, setting a strong pace two furlongs from home, but. Fils de Vaals, Mountain Fox and Chief Lord closed on them nearing the home turn. Kriemhild dropped Race Away at the distance and looked likely to win, but Mountain Fox and Fils de Vaals both came at her very solidly and the three flashed across the line with heads between them, the verdict going to Fils de Vaals from Mountain Fox and Ki'icmhild.
’The winner put in an electrifying run to get. the stake and thoroughly deserved his win. Mountain Fox was a little unlucky. Kriemhild, who is a sister to Wotan. ruined her chance by her own solid pace. Sanciful never looked likely and Kilometre could not act in the going. Easy for Promoted Hack.
The Urenui Handicap proved a good thing for the promoted hack, Te Huia, who easily accounted 'for the favourite, Russian Ballet. Te Huia led all the way and though he ran very wide on the home (urn and allowed Russian Ballet. to get within a length of . him, hi’ camo away again in the straight and won by two and a half lengths without being extended. Russian Ballet was just ns easily second from Clessamor. The other runners, Friesland and Red Sand, were well beaten. In his only oilier start in open company, Te Huia ran second to Brazen King in the Waverley Cup. He is an own brother to Silk Sox. A Good Three-year-old. The Te Awamutu Hack Corato put up a splendid performance to win. the Qrnata
Hack Handicap with 9.10, a big weight for a three-year-old. He ran up ou terms with Gold Petal, and led to lhe turn, where Gold Petal dropped out. but Corato was immediately tackled by Silver Gift, who had improved her position on the turn. Silver Gift hung on desperately to Corato, but eventually he got the upper hand and went on to win by a length and a half. . Three lengths further back, Le Marquis beat Amoroso for third money, and then eitine Gold Petal and Lady Boden. Deficit was interfered with at the halfmile and almost at the same spot St. Cedric came down and Gold Band fell over him. None of the riders was injured, and tile stewards found that the accidents were purely accidental. Heavy rain was falling while this race was being run, and the track was very slippery.
