LONG, ROUGH VOYAGE

England to Melbourne

FRESH FOOD RUNS OUT

Melbourne, January 30.

The former Norwegian steamer James Cook arrived at Melbourne from Newcastle-on-Tyne direct with the crew in desperate need of fresh food after a passage of 67 days, in which the vessel encountered a series of hurricanes.

When the first news of the vessel’s plight was received by wireless in Melbourne, a pilot steamer was dispatched with provisions and tobacco. These were hoisted aboard the James Cook and the crew made a hasty meal of the first fresh food they had tasted for nearly two mouths. Captain A. Jackson stated that after passing the Cape of Good Hopb storms battered the ship, and for days on end huge seas s.wept the small vessel from stein to stern.

The James-Cook has a gross tonnage of 2116 tons, and will be employed in the Sydney-New Zealand tiinber service.
