MARTON SHOW

Large Entries For 22nd Annual Fixture HIGH QUALITY STOCK Minister Praises District For Fine Display Dominion Special Service. Marton, January 31. The Marton District Agricultural and Pastoral Association held its twenty-second annual show on the Marton Park to-day, the weather being considerably cooler than has been usual this .season and consequently more suitable for an attraction that draws people from many miles around.

A new record was established in the live stock classes, there being over 900 exhibits. Sheep, with 550, was the most popular division, while the various cattle breeds were also well represented. The calf club competitions were productive of exceptionally high entries, there being thirty calves on parade. Horses, the draughts in particular, was another Strong section, the total approaching the century mark.

Several breeders from other provinces whos’c stock have won awards at the recent Royal Show were present with their exhibits, which naturally made the winning standard very high. 'A comprehensive schedule of competitions for schools and home cookery drew strong entries, but it was regrettable that the numerous grassland farmers in the Rangitikei district were not given the opportunity of comparing the quality of their products with those of their neighbours in open competition. The sheep dog trials saw forty dogs in competition in the five classes. The public was well catered for by a large and varied selection of ring competitions. There was also a comprehensive selection of side-shows and other stalls. In officially. declaring the show open, the Minister ‘of Agriculture, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, complimented the people of Marton upon ha_ving such beautiful surroundings as the location for their show. He had not seen prettier showgrounds elsewhere. ‘‘l am pleased that better entries have been received for this show, and this I consider is another indication that prosperity is gradually returning,” he said. “The Government realised that farmers and farm lands were New Zealand’s best asset, and that it was out of the question to allow farm lands to deteriorate. I think that farmers have borne their burden well, and as a result we are still able to meet competition as well as ever before. My city friends hayo disputed the amount shown in the agricultural estimates, but pn the ‘ whole all are agreed that this expenditure is warranted.” . . All through the day the park was well attended, and again in the evening when the major attraction was .provided by a track meeting under the auspices of the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club.

JUDGES’ COMMENT Mr. C. G. C. Dernier said that the Jerseys were strongly represented, on the whole, although he regretted that the younger stock was very mixed in •respect of type. The champions and reserve champions were outstanding, and easily selected from the other claimants. lhe reserve champion cow was only just beaten for the premiership by a very narrow margin. Mr. Denner also expressed the opinion that the champion bull was the Ibest he bad seen at recent shows iu the southern half of the island. “I was very favourably impressed with the classes I had to judge here to-day, said Mr. J. E. Hewitt, I’ahmtua. "I should say the sheep would compare favourably with those exhibited at other shows, although, as is only to be expected, the sheep I judged to-day are showing signs of having been affected by the drought. The champions and. all those that won first awards are typical of the Romney breed, and all possess go id fleeces.” The judge of all the pig classes, Mr. A. R. Gudopp, New Plymouth, thought that the classes were full of quality, speaking generally. “I would have liked to have seen more competition,” he said, “but no fault could be found with the champions of both sexes in the respective breeds. In most cases the animals showed fine shoulders, and the stock convinced me that we are'breeding along the right lines.”

Mr.i R. M. Perry, Masterton. adjudicated in the Southdown and flock trnui classes, and expressed the opinion that the open classes were excellent. The flock ram class was exceptionally well supported, the. winning pen being a' quartet of low and thick-set type of flock rains. Mr. 11. li. Green, Palmerston North, judged tfie Friesian, Ayrshire and Unregistered Dairy Cattle classes. He thought that the two championt in the Ayrshires were good specimens of the breed, although the cow was carrying a little too much condition for show purposes. The bull championship was awarded to the two-year-old bull, which was a promising young animal. There was no competition in the Friesians, but the two winning cows were worthy prize winners. The champion bull won from the other competitor by virtue of its superior bone and skin. Speaking of the dairy cattle, Mr. Green stated that the classes were well filled, and that the calf class was worthy of special mention. The champion cow in milk had a splendid udder, and possessed all the necessary dairy qualities. These classes were good throughout, and a decided improvement upon recent shows in the district.
