The demolition of the old chemist’s pharmacy in Greytown, and incidentally one of the oldest two-story business houses in the Wairarapa, was commenced this week. The building, with its old shingle roof, was one of the best-known landmarks in South Wairarapa, and the majority of the residents always referred to it as “The Ark.” It was erected some 65 years ago by Mr. G. Udy, and was the first two-story building in the town. The late Mr. L. St. George was the first chemist to occupy the premises, at least three others having since been in occupation. The timber is all heart of totara, and much of it is as good to-day as it was when it was first milled.
