FIERCE BATTLE IN INDIAN VILLAGE
Gurkhas and Santhalis USE OF BOWS & POISONED ARROWS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received January 31, 7 p.m.) Calcutta, January 30. Five were killed and many injured in a fierce battle between Santhalis, aboriginal' inhabitants of Bihar Province, and the warlike Gurkhas in the village of Sonngarha in the Singhbhum district. Two thousand Santhalis were holding festival dances when Gurkha miners appeared, creating a disturbance and brandishing kukris. Police efforts at reconciliation failed, and the enraged Santhalis summoned fellow tribesmen by beating a drum. The latter, armed with bows and poisoned arrows. attacked and routed the Gurkhas, killing four. One Santhali was killed by mistake for a Gurkha.
