With eight new-born dead and many others ill in the maternity ward of the Holy Name Hospital at Teaneck, New Jersey, of a mysterious illness since January 1, 40 other mothers and their babies have been moved to other hospitals and New York city diagnosticians called in in an effort to determine the nature of the disease, which resembles intestinal influenza. Autopsies performed on several children are reported to have been inconclusive. Twenty babies contracted the illness which, however, has affected no othep patients. DEATHS TOTAL FORTY Drinkers of Poison Liquor New York, January 29. The deaths from poison'liquor now total 40, 14 being in two other cities near Utica. A cable published yesterday stated that a Utiea message reported that, with three more deaths that day, a total of 10 persons had lost their lives over the weekend from drinking a poison liquor containing wood alcohol, a beverage which was sold at various non-licensed premises. It appeared to have been obtained from a single source—a group of bootleggers, for whom the police were seeking. The situation had become so serious that the authorities had been compelled to issue a public warning.
