Oak copal varnish painted between the soles and the uppers will . help to preserve the stitches. The white marks that sea water often .leaves on black shoes can be removed if a paste of blacklead and lemon juice is left ou for an hour and allowed to dry off. Sea-water stains on brown shoes can be removed with washingsoda and milk. Dissolve a lump of washing, soda about the size of a. sirpenny piece in two tablespoonfuls of hot milk. AVhile this is still warm dab it round the stains. Allow it to dry and repeat the process. When thoroughly dry polish in the usual way. ECONOAIICAL KNITTING.
