Set to Every Tenth Person in Palmerston North MANAWATU JOTTINGS Dominion Special Service Palmerston North, January 30. In Palmerston North there is a radio set to approximately every 10 persons. In July, of 1927, the total number of licenses issued in Palmerston North was 239. This figure has increased each year, until today the number of license-holders totals 2694. This includes sets in operation in the district bounded by Aokr.utere, Bunnythorpe, Whakarongo, Linton, Longburn. and- Kairanga. Garrison Band. The Palmerston North Garrisoi} Band carried out a quickstep practice at the showgrounds last evening in preparation for the 1935 band contest. The Palmerston North Garrison Band is the present champion baud. New Palmerston Building. The old wo’oden two-story building occupied by Leary’s pharmacy in the southwestern portion of the Square, is to be dismantled shortly, and a modern brick two-story structure erected in its place. Mr. A. J. Graham, senior partner of the firm, has worked on these premises 42 years. Otago Club Officers. Poor Fishing Season. Because of the unusually long period of dry weather lowering the level of the Manawatu River and causing the fish to remain at the bottom, anglers in _ the Manawatu district continue to experience poor fishing. On Saturday five fish were landed at Karere on the fly in the evening. Experienced anglers report that it is useless to sweep the waters in the daytime. The present season is one of the poorest ever experienced. Grass Fire Suppressed. The Palmerston North Fire Brigade received a cull to a grass fire at the Awapuni Old Peoples’ Home at 9 o’clock last night. When the brigade arrived the outbreak had almost been subdued by neighbouring residents. Inter-centre Bowls.
Fourteen rinks of bowlers from clubs affiliated to the Manawatu Bowling Centre journeyed to Hawke’s Bay to-day. Matches were played at Napier during the. morning and at Hastings during the afternoon. The party was accompanied by Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., president of the Manawatu Bowling Centre.
Croquet Trophies. On the Northern Croquet Club's greens on Monday afternoon the holders. Mrs. Holmes and Miss D’Ath, were defeated by Mesdames Colquhoun and Lyall. 15-25. in a match for the Bennett buttons. At Feilding yesterday Mesdames Petrie and Wood, of the Orona club, lost the Pollock stars to Mesdames Moyes and Simpson, of the Northern Croquet Club. The score was 26-22 in favour of the challengers.
Personals. Mr. T. P. riondoiTsou. organist an'l choirmaster of St. David’s Presbyterian Church. Terrace End, has resigned. Mr. W. 11. Cadwallader, local certifying officer for the Unemployment Board, has returned to Palmerston North from a holiday spent at Raumati beach. The Rev. A. N. Scotter, B.A;, of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Palmerston North, is visiting Auckland for a meeting of the Foreign Mission Board of the Church. The Rev. A. N. Scotter is chairman of the Manawatu-Hawke’e Bay district.
