NATIVE BUSH BURNT
Blaze at Mauriceville Dominion Special Service. . Masterton, January 30. Residents of the Mauriceville West district have had an anxious time since Monday evening, when a fire broke out in some scrub near the edge of the State Forest Reserve on Mount Brure. A fairly high wind blew yesterday, and nearby residents and settlers kept a close watch on the outbreak all day and again in the evening. No buildings have been destroyed, although several fences have been ruined. The flames at first appeared to be confined to scrub and blackberry bushes, but they slowly crept toward the State forest, gaining a hold on the green timber, and burning up the dry leaves and undergrowth. The blaze gradually assumed a stronger hold on the green bush, and began to eat further into the heart of the area of beautiful native trees and shrubs. The fire continued last night, and was still burning. There was very little wind this morning. The flames now seem to be moving forward very slowly.
