FINDING AT INQUEST

Narcotic Drug Causes Death A Uncling that he died from the effects of an overdose of a narcotic drug inadvertently taken, was returned at the inquest on Maurice Edward Denniston, held before the coi-oner, Mr. E. Gilbertson, J.P., in the Lower Hutt Court yesterday. The coroner remarked that it was clear from the evidence that deceased, who was a cheerful man with n<> linaneial difficulties, had no intention to commit suicide. “I think he took an overdose of a drug to ease his pain,” Mr. Gilbertson said. A son of deceased, John Fitzgerald Denniston, said his father suffered for about 12 months from neuritis, and especially great pain from an X-ray burn on his hand, with the result that very occasionally he took a mild drug to ease the pain and obtain sleep. Never at any time had he expressed any intention of committing suicide. His father had no linaneial or business worries, and had a comfortable home. Dr. Koger Anker Bakewell said he found deceased in a state of deep coma, showing symptoms of a narcotic poisoning. To a question he said in ills opinion, a narcotic drug caused death. Dr. Gilbert Haywood Miratus said he

was of the same opinion as the previous witness. “May I say,” he added, “that it is extraordinary how professional people take drugs that they would be horrified at anyone else taking. I have seen that frequently in the course of my profession.”The coroner: “I gather from your remarks that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing?” Witness: “Candidly, yes.” > Constable Tanner said that be found no drugs or any note concerning deceased’s intention to take his life.
