JUMPED FROM TRAIN INTO RIVER
Thought to be Wanted Man LATER SEEN AT WAIROA MAORI PA By Telegraph.— Press Association. Tauranga, January 30. As the express from Auckland to Taneatua was crossing the Wairoa River, about four miles before reaching Tauranga, passengers experienced a thrill at seeing a man leap from the train into tlie river. He is believed to be Herbert Maxfield, about 25 years of age. He got ashore in the vicinity of tlie Bethlehem Native Pa, and was later seen at Wairoa Pa and Otumoetai. Constables Moore and Audley were advised, and searched the country districts and the town all night unsuccessfully. Maxfield is wanted on charges of breaking, entering, and theft at Tauranga about three years ago, and is believed to have been deported from Australia and to have come back to New Zealand by tlie Marama on Monday last. Maxfield formerly belonged to Tauranga. and was declared an habitual criminal some years ago
