Widespread Damage In Britain SMALL VESSELS LOST (British Official Wireless.) (Received January 29, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, Jaunary 28. Snow fell yesterday and <>n Saturday throughout the British Isles, and sharp frost at nights covered rhe roads with ice aud disorganised traffic. Throughout northern and eastern England many roads were blocked by snowdrifts, and the snowfall was. sufficiently heavy in Loudon on Saturday night to delay buses, trams and railways. Tlie icy gale which raged throughout Friday and Saturday died down yesterday, leaving widespread damage in its wake. Tremendous seas beat all round British coasts throughout the week-end, several small vessels being lost, fortunately without loss of life, and six lifeboats responded lo calls of distressed shipping. COLD SPELL IN INDIA Havoc in Cotton Crops (Received January 29. 7.20 p.m.) Calcutta, January 28. Tlie recent icy spell throughout India created havoc in the cotton crops of the Gujarat district, Bombay. In many eases over 70 per dent, of the plants were destroyed, while in other Bombay districts there was widespread destruction to tobacco and fruit crops.
