SUSPECTED CASE OF SMALLPOX

Discovery at Auckland REMOVED TO HOSPITAL FOR OBSERVATION By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 29. A suspected case of smallpox, the patient being an Auckland resident who returned by the Aorangi on January 20 from a trip abroad has been detected by Dr. T. .1 Hughes, medical officer of health in Auckland. lhe patient, who has been receiving medical attention for another complaint since his return, was noticed on Monday to have developed a slight rash. Dr. Hughes was advised, and to-day ordered the removal of the patient to the Auckland Hospital, where he has been isolated for observation. “It is too early to say whether or not the case is smallpox.” Dr. Hughes said “We have not yet diagnosed the case. A specialist has expressed the opinion that it'is not smallpox.” The patient'was the only one of the Aorangi's Auckland passengers yet traced who was showing any symptoms, Dr. Hughes added. During the trip to New Zealand” he was suffering from another complaint, and on arrival at Auckland he went to his home and remained there as far as was known. There was no satisfactory accommodation at the patient’s home for isolation, however, and so he had been removed to hospital. The rash developed by the patient was considered suspicious.
