CANTERBURY RETAINS SANDERS CUP

Victory in Fourth Race MASTERLY EXHIBITION OF TACTICS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Half Moon Bay (Stewart Is.). January 28. By winning tlie fourth race in the Sanders Cup contest, held in Paterson’s Inlet this afternoon. Irene, tlie Canterbury boat, retains the trophy. She was expertly handled, her skipper giving a masterly exhibition of yachting tactics. The morning race was won by the Monica, which was sailed in a splendid fashion. The weather conditions had vastly improved. The course in the morning was a windward to leeward one of three miles, sailed three times. A triangular course three times round was decided upon for what proved to be the final race. The Irene, which won on both Thursday and Saturday, had an entirely new set of conditions to contend with, but she proved herself to be equally at home in the lighter breeze. A thrilling finish marked the race which gave her the championship, and only the expert knowledge of her skipper enabled her to reach the finishing line ahead of the Monica. The Monica was also expertly handled, and right throughout was well and capably managed. The Betty, skippered by Mason, did not show up prominently, while the Evelyn, Southland’s boat, was never in the race in both morning and afternoon events. The morning race was sailed in lighter airs. Monica’s Leading Position. Tlie Monica was always in a loading position in the morning race. The Irene, breaking her peak halyard block, lost much valuable time which she found it impossible to make up. • Crews were as follow for the afternoon race :— Irene: Sinclair (skipper), May, Forman Monica: McKenzie (skipper), Nolan. Elliott. I Betty: Mason (skipper) McLaren, Kennedy. Evelyn: 1’ Gough (skipper), 11. Gough, Ferguson i All the boats carried leading jibs, ami on the gunfire the Otago boat had the weather position. Tlie Betty and the. Monica quickly set their spinnakers, and were soon followed by tlie other two boats. The Betty by this time had taken the lead at the Ulva Island mark The Betty took the weather position, followed by the Monica, the Irene and the Evelyn. On the run down to the Dirty Island mark the Irene tried to gain tne weather position but, although successful in getting to the weather of the Monica, she found the Betty too hard a proposition. Mason was watching very carefully, and immediately luffed up toward the Canterbury boat’s attack. The order round the mark was: Betty, Monica, Irene and Evelyn. Ton seconds separated the Otago and Wellington boats, while the Irene was 2sec. behind the Monica. The Evelyn came 25sec. behind the Canterbury' craft. Great Duel With Irene.

All the boats sailed on the starboard tack until well in-shore. Then tlie Irene and the Monica continued witli a series of short boards. The Betty and the Evelyn worked the open water. A great fight took place between the Monica and the Irene. It was not long, however, before the Irene weathered the Monica, and both contrived to use short boards up the coast. Canterbur.y’s boat answered every move from the Monica. At the commencement of the'second round the Irene had 31 seconds on the Monica, while the Betty was 58 seconds behind the leader. The Evelyn was 2 minutes 15 seconds behind the Irene. Ou the lead to Ulva the Irene lost a good deal of ground, but she rounded 21 seconds ahead of the Monica. Tile Betty was 1 minute 25 seconds, and the Evelyn 3 minutes 10 seconds after the lending boat. At the weather mark the order did not change. The Betty and tlie Monica worked short boards for a time. Then Wellington's boat stood out into tlie open water. Nearing the home mark, tlie Betty was (tie first to go .about, to lay for (lie buoy, while the Monica followed. The coniniciieeinent of Hiq third round found liie .Monica -1 Isec. behind the Irene. The Betty followed 2min. later. The lead to Ulva was without incident, the Irene gaining slightly on' the Monica, while Hie Betty lost some ground. Challenge li.y .Monica. Rounding times were: Monica. Imin.: Betty. 3min. 50see. The run to the. weather flat showed little difference, the Monica picking up six seconds and tlie Betty 40see. on tlie leader After rounding the mark on the lilial beat for home, the Irene’s skipper was watching every move made by the Monica,, and McKenzie also employed every kind of device, but without success. Nearing tlie finishing line in the more sheltered waters. Wellington's skipper was going about in quick succession and forcing Sinclair to do likewise. Eventually the Irene wen’: over (lie line 23sec. ahead. The limes wore as followlrene. 2 3(1. 433 27; Monica. 2.39, 4.33.50: Bott-. 2.30. 4 3(1.44: Evelvn, 2 30. 4.40.18 Tn the evening the commodore of the Stewart Island Yacht Clnb. Mr..
