POST OFFICE PICNIC
Outing at Maidstone Park
The staff of the General Post Office (Head Office) held their annual picnic at Maidstone Park on Friday. About 500 excursionists left town by special train and spent a most enjoyable day. Special attention was devoted to the children, each of whom received a present. Prominent visitors were Mr. F. J. Shanks (deputy director-general),, Mr. C. S. Plank (c'hief telegraph engineer), and Mrs. Plank, Mr. S. A. Ogilvie and Mrs. Ogilvie, Mr. W. R. Newell and Mrs. Newell and Mr. P. Cutforth. Apologies for inability to attend were received from the Postmaster-General (Hon. Adam Hamilton), and the Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department (Mr. G. McNamara). ,At the conclusion of the day, the picnic chairman (Mr. M. M. Simpson), intro, duced Mr. C. S. Plank, who presented the prizes won. The committee responsible for the arrangements received special commendations on its efforts. The chairman was Mr. M. M. Simpson, and the joint secretaries, Messrs. A. J. Cameron and A. M. Pinkerton. The general committee comprised Misses Young, Nankervis, Keith, Phillips, Burns, Thomas, Lindsay, Batterby, Mander, Henderson, and Handley and Messrs. F. Anderson, T. W. Martin, E. Perrett, W. Dredge, E. Hughes, T. Hartley, Jury, T. James, H. Rose, H. S. Coupland, G. Bennett, E. Day and R. Hagan. Results are as follow: — ligg and Spoon Race. —First heat: Miss Handlev 1, Mrs. Atkinson 2. Second heat: Miss Pearce 1. Miss Robinson 2. Third heat: Mrs. Dredge 1, Mrs. Dandy 2. Final: Miss D. Handley 1, Miss Pearce 2. G.P.O. Handicap (open) 100yds.—First heat: Sale 1. McDonnell 2. Second heat: Higgins 1, Fish 2. Third heat: Evans and Caulton, dead-heat. 1. Fourth heat: Dandy 1, Duff 2. Final: C. Evans 1, J. L. Sale 2. Three-Legged Race. —First heat: Stevens and Mrs. Stevens 1, Clements and Miss Hoddy 2, Dornan and Miss Morrison 3. Second heat: Duff and Mrs. Duff 1, Scott and Miss Burton 2. Watts and Miss Pearce 3.
