ATHLETIC CONTEST

Wellington Clubs Beaten By Masterton Team T. ROE’S CYCLING TRIUMPH An athletic and cycling team from the Wairarapa, members of the Masterton club, visited Wellington on Saturday, and at an evening meeting in the Basin Reserve scored an easy points victory over the Petone and Olympic clubs in a triangular contest. Masterton secured 59 points, Petone 36, and Olympic 27. All three clubs were represented at good strength. The events were watched by about 500 spectators. Competition was keen to the end, but times were marred by a strong wind blowing across the field. Cycling events attracted a great many competitors; the half-mile, one mile, and three mile races had each about thirty contestants. The finals in all three were won by T. Roe, Petone. In the half-mile he passed 'the leaders in the inevitably closely-bunched and manoeuvring field in the back straight, and in the tactical fight in the mile he was in a handy position for a strong sprint. The three-mile race was interesting in that the greater part consisted mainly of a close duel between Roe and T. McCord (Masterton), with first one pulling ahead and then the other. In winujng by 15 yards Roe was not extended. The field of distance runners was given a surprise in the mile by P. Wilson (Olympic), when he ran to the front earlv and from then on steadily increased tTie gap. With a quarter of a mile to go he was about 50 yards ahead, and was still running strongly enough to make it almost impossible for him to be caught. At about that time Barrer, of Masterton, who was lying fourth, made a fine sprint, and, leaving the rest of the field, cut down Wilson’s lead to about 15 yards. In a close finPjli Ogg (Olympic) won the 880yds. from Hack (Masterton). Ogg came third in the 440yds., behind Pye (Masterton) and Crooks (Petone). Pye won convincingly, and he came first also in the 220yds. event. In the programme which interspersed the triangular contest the 440yds. cycle handicap had an unfortunate ending. Walsh (Petone) and G. Pye (Masterton) collided and crashed after passing the tape and gaining second and third places respectively, and Pye received an injury to the shoulder. An interesting novelty event was held when Fitzsimmons, Hutt club splinter, attempted to beat the Olympic club cyclist over 100 yards. This has been tried several times before in New Zealand, to prove that the cyclist has a definite advantage, but on this occasion the sprinter ran him to within a fdw yards at the finish.
