Catholic Association Wins Against Tennis League FERNANDEZ CUP MATCH The annual match between the Wellington Catholic Lawn Tennis Association and the Wellington Lawn Tennis League, the two major associations, was held at the new Hataitai Reserve courts on Saturday afternoon. The Catholic association representatives won by 16 rubbers to 8. The match, the second annual contest for the Fernandez Cup, held by the Catholic association, was played in Wellington tennis conditions at their worst. A fresh northerly at 1 o'clock when play commenced gave way to, a wind of gale force at times, with the result that tennis of any sustained accuracy was out of ; the question. Clouds of dust and grit swept the courts at frequent intervals. Detailed results are as follow, Catholic Association players being mentioned first: Men’s singles: Darroch beat Deal, 6-1, 6-1; Gould lost to Webster, 6-0, 3-6, 3-6; O’Halloran beat Hartridge, 6-2, 6-1; Jones beat McKenzie, 6-2, 5-6, 6-4; Hepburn beat Robb 6-4, 3-6, 6-4; Crimmin beat Charles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Ladles’ singles: Miss Griffin lost to Miss Barclay, 1-6, 6-5, 6-4; Miss Duggan beat Miss Staples, 6-1, 6-1; Mrs. Williams beat Miss Johnson, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3; Miss Anderson lost to Miss Ritchie, 5-8, 5-6; Miss McCarthy beat Miss Knight, 6-2, 6-2; Miss Ross beat Miss Danes, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Men’s doubles: Gould and O’Halloran beat Deal and Hartridge, 6-5, 3-G, 6-0; Darroch and Jones beat Webster and McKenzie, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2; Hepburn and Crimmin lost to Robb and Charles, 5-6, 3-6. Ladies doubles: Misses Griffin and Anderson beat Misses Barclay and Johnson, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5; Miss Duggan and Mrs. Williams beat Misses Staples and Knight, 6-5, 6-5; Misses McCarthy and Ross lost to Misses Ritchie and Danes, 6-4, 5-6 4-6. INTER-CLUB ~ MATCHES .Lower Grade Results A heavy northerly wind upset play completely at the association courts at Miramar on Saturday, when the interclub competitions were resumed in part. Competitions were confined to the second and third grade divisions only, as most of the higher graded players are either at the New Zealand championships or at other tournaments. Detailed results are as follow: — SECOND DIVISION, MEN’S. University v. Khandallah. University beat Khandallah by C matches to nil. Newtown v. Miramar B. Newtown won from Miramar B> by default. THIRD A DIVISION. Wadestown v. Lyall Bay D. Wadestown beat Lyall Bay D by 7 matches to 1. Results, Wadestown players first: —Singles: W. Smith beat Reid, 6-4, 6-3; Haswell beat Dalgleish, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; MeNamara beat Wilson, 6-5, 6-3; Jones beat Wiren, 6-3, 6-3. Doubles: Haswell and Jones lost to Reid and Dalgleish, 6-5, 3-6, 6-8; McNamara and Smith beat Wilson and Wiren, 6-1, 6-4; Haswell and Jones beat 'Wilson and Wiren, 6-2, 6-3; McNamara and Smith beat Reid and Dalgleish, 6-4, 6-5. Hataitai A beat Technical by 7 matches to 1.
THIRD C DIVISION. Newtown v. Miramar B. Newtown beat Miramar B by 5 matches to 3.
