SYDNEY RACING
A.J.C. Meeting THE MARNE’S CHALLENGE STAKES By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received January 27, 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, January 27. Midsummer weather iavoured the first day of the A.J.O. anniversary meeting. The track was in excellent condition. The Marne unexpectedly won the Challenge Stakes in great style. Well back at the half-mile, The Marne was fourth into the straight behind the pacemakers Vista, Gay Hawk and Regular Bachelor. The Marne then forced his way to the front, and in a desperate finish beat off Veilantif. Hadrian led all the way to win the Widden Handicap, and proved he is a very smart colt, and may be worthy of class two-year-old races in the autumn. Ben Field, favourite for this event, ran poorly. The January Handicap provided a thrilling finish. Contact appeared to carry High Cross wide out at the finish of the race, which resulted in a dead-heat, but the latter’s protest against Contact was dismissed. Results: — TRIAL HURDLE. Two miles.
