TAKAPUNA CUP

Kiltowyn’s Handsome Win INTERESTING EVENTS Plate to Lia Fail Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 26. Delightful weather favoured the opening of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslie to-day, racing proved very interesting. The totalisator handled £23,003/10/-, as against £20,586/10/- for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £2117. - Kiltowyn was the only actual favourite to score, but all the winners were well supported, with the exception of Air Lassie, who brought off a surprise jn the Orewa Highweight Handicap, paying over a score on the win machine. The each way favourite, High Tea, had every chance in the Trial Stakes, but could finish only fourth. However, he is not quite ready yet and should do better with each race. Chief Emerald and High Tea were the leaders into the straight from Lady Diana and Astarth. A furlong from the post Firebrick. Maz:r and Alignment challenged, Firebrick finishing very resolutely to win going away from Mazir. who beat Alignment by a neck. High Tea was right up fourth, followed by Lady Diana and Astarth, Firebrick was having only his second race. He is a four-year-old by Romeo from Fireclay and is likely :o prove very useful. Mazir and Alignment were both closer at the finish than at any other stage. Zealandia Handicap. Only five started in the Zealandia Handicap, and King Ford, reaching the front at the end of the first furlong, was never afterwards headed, winning by half a length from Greek Gold, who was last at the turn, and came home strongly on the rails. -Prolyxo also finished well on the outside for third. British Columbia, after challenging the winner inside the distance, tired back to fourth and Tradesman, second into the straight, also weakened in the run home. King Ford carried 51b. overweight and ran one of his best races. Greek Gold did well in his first outing- since his operation for wind trouble, which has evidently been a success. Favourite Just Beaten. The each way favourite, Ballymoney, made a fine attempt to win the Ferry Hack Handicap, but Adalene, who was also heavily supported. just outstayed him nt the finish. Ballymoney and Instalment were the leaders into the straight from Mies Lorraine, Adalene and Gay Egypt. Adalene finishing better than usual to beat Ballymoney by a head. Merry Lap, after getting cut_ off early and drifting to near the rear, finished on solidly for third, and Mise Lorraine was fourth, running her best race for some time, Gay Egypt was handy throughout, but could make no impression in the straight. Adalene is brilliant on the tracks, but her form m public has not been as good as anticipated. Kiltowyn Justifies Support. The topweight Kiltowyn was backed down to a short price on the w;n machine for the Takapuna Cup, and lie justified the support by winning handsomely. Kiltowyn was in the rear most of the way and was still there at the turn, where King's Archer, Mnngntoon and Monanui were together in front, ahead of Sinking Fund. Below the distance, where there was some scrimmaging, when Sinking Fund attempted to go through between the leaders. Kiltowyn received an opening on the rails, and he dashed through to win. running away by a length and a half from Prince Colossus, who finished solidly on the inside to just beat King’s Archer. Sinking Fund was fourth, followed by Monnnui and Caliente. Kiltowyn showed undoubted superiority to the others. Monanui was not placed in the first four, but appeared to be ahead of King’s Archer and Sinking Fund. Application Decisively. The third favourite, Application, scored decisively in the Calliope Handicap from the outsider. Fleetwind, who paid a fine price for second. The start was very uneven, and the field was badly strung out. before going a furlong, when Fleetwind was in command from Application. Over the last furlong Application was too good, and beat Fleetwind convincingly. Flood Title finished gamely under pressure, but he was too far back after his had beginning to make up the leeway. Triune, apart from his bad start, displayed no dash at all. Exciting Finish in Plate. Three favourites fought out an exciting finish in the AVynyard Plate, Lia Fail, who led throughout, staying on to win by a head from King Musk, who defeated Scotland by a neck. Crooning was a good fourth after being well in the picture. This was her best performance. She stayed on very solidly at the finish. Scotland and King Musk both challenged in the most determined fashion in the straight, and there was little between the three place-getters a chain from the post. King Musk lugged in on ■Scotland at the finish, hampering the latter, who might have just. won. Scotland had to be cased just on the post. Air Lassie's Surprise. Air Lassie was responsible for a surprise in winning the Orewa Highweighr Handicap, paying over a score on the win machine. Barn Dance and Air Lassie were responsible for all the running, and the latter always held a slight advantage in the last furlong to score by a neck. King Tut, always well placed, was a fair third, and Nun Nicer was fourth, ahead of A’alpai and Princess Bede. The winner is owned by Mr. AV. J. AVilson, who scored earlier in the day with Firebrick. This was her best performance to date, and Barn Dance also ran his best race. The favourite, Scotch Nation, was always about the middle of the field, and never appeared really dangerous. On Parade Wins Decisively. Maine was an favourite ip the Rangitoto Handicap, but the best she. could do was finish third. Dancing Lady made the running to the turn from Sirona and Roman Mascot. At this stage On Parade made a sharp forward move from the rear, and he ran on splendidly to win very decisively from Sirona, who was a length and a half ahead of Alaine. Tuaheahe, finishing on, was fourth, followed byKing Mestor and Roman Alascot. Miss Lu was badly left at the post. On Parade is an improved horse, and he had a little in hand at the finish. Sirona showed signs of regaining form, and

M;Kno made a creditable showing, but was not quite good enough. Dancing Lady stopped quickly and Roman Alascot also tired. However, the latter should improve with every gallop.
