City Mission Shelter
Sir, —It seems a shame that AVellington’s Good Samaritan, the Rev. Fielden Taylor, should have to beg for funds, to carry on his splendid work in feeding and sheltering homeless men. In these times every old subscriber and many new ones should put their hands into their pockets to relieve the missioner’s anxiety, and ensure carrying on the relief which means so much to those who have been bard hit in life’s ’battle, often through no fault of their own. It requires only a little imagination to appreciate what a good meal and a night’s shelter count to our fellows in need, and it is up to those who have sufficient to share some of it with these unfortunates. Replying to "On Sustenance’s” letter, which appeared in “The Dominion” on January 23, I would suggest to all those in his position that they would find the day pass very much more pleasantly if they sought opportunities to do, little jobs voluntarily where needed. For example, they might find some old lady whose windows wanted cleaning, or her garden digging or weeding. Surely there are many ways of doing little kindnesses for our neighbours each day. I once met a Japanese Who with his wife devoted his whole life to voluntary work among the very poorest. He had been :. merchant, but gave up all, no< has a settlement for service in Kyoto, Japan. His needs have all been met, and he is certainly not one of the unemployed. His happy and useful life is a good illustration of the Master’s saying: "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.”—l am, etc.. AV.F.K. AVellington, January 25. «>■
