Dr. J. T. Campbell Appointed Lecturer in Mathematics The appointment of Dr. J. T. Campbell as lecturer in mathematics and assistant to the professor of mathematics at Victoria University College was announced yesterday. Dr. Campbell, who has had a brilliant academic career, was educated at Gisborne High School, where in 1924 he was dux of the school, and won a University entrance scholarship. At Otago University he obtained the following distinctions:—l92s. Junior Beverly scholarship in mathemates, Gilray memorial prize in English; 1926, Stuart prize in physics; 1927, Senior scholarship in pure and applied mathematics, senior Beverly scholarship in mathematics. In 1928 Dr. Campbell obtained his degree of M.A. in mathematics, witli first-class honours, and was also awarded the Cook prize in mathematics by tlie New Zealand University. In 1929-30 he held the Ross Fellowship at Knox College, Dunedin, and in 1930 was awarded . the post-graduate scholarship in arts. He proceeded to Edinburgli, and in 1932 was awarded the degree of doctor of philosophy in mathematics. Before leaving for Scotland he conducted tutorial classes in mathematics at Knox College, and for the university session 1932-33 at Edinburgli he was appointed assistant lecturer in technical mathematics. While in Scotland he also took various courses of a special kind. On his return to New Zealand Dr. Campbell was appointed to tlie staff of Nelson College in 1933. where he has since been teaching mathematics lo Form Via and others. Two of his publications have api’eared in the proceedings of the Edinburg Mathematical Society.
