SMITH FAMILY APPEAL
Food and Clothing Wanted fl’lie secretary of the Smith Family stated yesterday that there is still an insistent demand for relief, especiallv for food, and it was with great regret that applications, except in very urgent , cases, had to be declined. It was understood, he said, that the Mayor’s Relief Committee had partially suspended action, but intended to resume iu March. Citizens could help the Smith Family to supply urgent needs during the current month and February by sending contributions of food, bread, vegetables, etc., to the family office in Wakefield Street. The family would be glad to pur. donors in touch with needy families to which donations of food, etc., could be made direct. Donors were reminded that assistance was granted only after expert investigation, and every effort was made to ensure that applicants for relief were really in need. Contributions of clothing were ver.v welcome. Garments sent in now con'd be reconditioned in the family workshops, and made ready for issue when the cold weather set in. Readers who have books to spare are asked to send them in for distribution to relief camps and gold-mining camps The men in these camps, very many of them men of education and culture, have sent the family letters expressing appreciation of the kindness of the public in keeping them supplied with good literature to employ their spare time. Over 3000 volumes and thousands of periodicals are now in circula tiou.
