“DRESS REHEARSAL”

Hauptmann in Witness Box I (Received January 25, 7.30 p.m.) Flemington, January 24. Hauptmann to-day took the witness stand to testify for the defence, but was given only a “dress rehearsal” to accustom him to the experience. Christian Frederickson, baker, at whose establishment Mrs. Hauptmann worked, was asked whether Hauptmann had come to his bakery to take his wife home on the night of the kidnapping. He replied: I think Hauptmann was there, but cannot swear for sure. Hauptmann, after Frederickson’s testimony, returned to the stand.for a few minutes be.fore the adjournment. Under Mr. Reilly’s questioning he insisted that he had an alibi for the night of April 2, when the ransom was paid. He said he went home at 6 p.m. and spent the evening with his wife and several friends playing musical numbers. He never left the house. In his short testimony, however, he never advanced his alibi for the night of the kidnapping.
