NEW DAIRY BOARD

Polling For Elective Members BALLOT IN MARCH Three Seats to be Filled No date has yet been fixed for the election of the three representatives of dajry companies on the New Zealand Dairy Board, but it is practically certain that the poll will take place about the middle of March. The personnel of the board will be completed by the appointment of one member by the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Compayn, Limited, and by the appointment of three Government nominees. No Government members will be announced until after the three elective members are known. The compilation of the rolls for the three wards —northern, middle aud southern—is now complete, but they will not close till about the end of the present month. Nominations for candidates will probably close about a fortnight later.. The official closing dates have not yet been deetrmined, but it is anticipated that they will be announced during the next day or so. After nominations have closed the ballot papers will be printed and distributed to authorised voting representatives. Candidates for Election. The present dairy board will be extinguished by Order-in-Council. Several of these retiring members, however, will be candidates for the election of three members of the new board by companies owning dairy factories. Mr. W. Grounds will be a candidate for the northern ward, which comprises roughly the North Auckland district aud South Auckland aud Waikato interests other than the New Zealand Dairy Company, Limited. Present indications are that he will lie opposed by a number of other candidates. Mr. Mervyn Wells, of Cambridge. will probably be one of his opponents. Mr. Wells is likely to attract a considerable vote from 'Waikato interests. Mr. A. J. Murdoch, M.P. for Marsden, has signified his intention of contesting the election in the northern ward, and it is understood that the chairman of directors of the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company, Mr. E. G. Appleton, will also be a candidate. Both these candidates are expected to poll well in the Whangarei and Dargaville districts. Mr. C. G. C. Denner, of Waipiko, Feilding, a member of the present board, will contest the middle ward, which comprises all tliat part of the North Island south of Taupo. No other candidates have yet been announced, although the name of Mr. W. Green, another board member, has been mentioned. Mr. Denner's chances are considered exceptionally good, and he is sure of strong support in the Rangitikei. Manawatu, Taranaki aud Hawke’s Bay districts. The Southern Ward. For the southern ward, which comprises all the South Island, Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands, there will be possibly four or five candidates. The South Island representatives on the present board are Messrs. C. P. Agar, J. Dunlop and W. Lee, and two of them at least are likely to be candidates for re-election. The chairman of the board, Mr. W. A. lorns, of Martinborough, has publicly indicated that he would not be a candidate for the new board in any capacity whatever, either as an elective member or a Government nominee. The Government, however, will probably be anxious to maintain some'continuity of policy between the present board and the board that will take its place, and it is possible that strong representations will be made to Mr. lorns with a view to his acceptance of an appointment as one of the Government’s nominees.
