“The Duke’s Holiday” For New Zealand Schools

Sir, —In less than two weeks’ time the schools will be reopening. The Duke has granted one extra day to celebrate his tour in New Zealand. 1 should like to suggest that instead of adding this extra day to the present holidays, the day be added to the Easter vacation. Good Friday falls on April 19, Easter Monday on April 22, Tuesday, April 23, is St. George's Day, and Thursday, April 25, is Anzac Day. Now, as the schools close on Thursday, April IS, and in the ordinary course of events would reopen, on Wednesday, April' 24, and close again cn Anzac Day, would it not be a good idea to close the schools on Wednesday, making this the extra day granted by the Duke. This would mean that the schools close on Thursday, April 18, and reopen on Friday, April 26. giving the children a full unbroken week at a time when a little spell would be a benefit to both scholars and teachers.—-I am, etc., A.B.C. Wellington, January 24.
