MELBOURNE WELCOME
New Zealand Athletes IMPRESSIVE TRIALS (Received January 24, 5.35 p.m.) Melbourne, January 23. The New Zealand athletes who are to compete in the centenary games contests on Saturday and Monday were welcomed to-day by the Lord Mayor, Aiderman Wales, and the chairman of the Centenary Council. Sir 11. Gengoult Smith. The New Zealanders have engaged in vigorous work with the English, Scottish, Finnish and inter-State teams. All the New Zealanders greatly impressed in their trials. The highlight of Saturday's programme will be the mile run, in which Craske (England), Barwick (Tasmania). Backhouse (Victoria). McLachlan (New Zealand) and Colman (Victoria), all champions, meet.
