“Radio Record” Filin Ballot
than SOOO persons voted in a film contest conducted recently by the “New Zealand Radio Record,” and some interesting facts were brought to light. For the best film of 1934 nearly 5000 votes were cast in favour of “The House of Rothschild,” while other historical 'films—“Queen Christina,” “The Private Life of Henry the “Eighth” and “Catherine the Great”— followed on the list. Norma Shearer was. chosen as the most popular woman star and George Arliss as the most popular : male. Janet Gaynor, Greta Garbo, Diana Wynyard. Ronald Colman, Clark Gable and Fredric March were not far behind the winners in this section of. the competition. For the best acting performance of the year the majority of votes was cast in favour of George Arliss’s performance in “The House of Rothschild,” while Charles Laughton's acting in “The' Private Life of Henry the Eighth” was awarded second place. “Cavalcade” easily headed the list for the “best film I have ever seen,” the runner-up being “Disraeli,” with “The House of Rothschild” third.”
