Dickens on the Screen
lovers of Dickens will heartily enjoy the thrill of seeing their favourite Dickensian characters come to life in “Great Expectations.” Nothing .in the whole range of Dickens surpassed this great story of love, intrigue and adventure, either in perfection of technique or in mastery of all resources of the novelist’s art. Henry Hull, who portrays the role of the convict, Magwitch, gives one of the most startling characterisations ever seen on the screen. The character, Pumblechook, enacted by\ Forrester Harvey, is actually better and droller and truer to imagination on the screen than in the book. Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith (Alan Hale) is quite the most lovable character, with his simple and delightful philosophy. Of all the Dickens characters Joe is one of the most attractive. Pip as a boy is played by George Breakstone. Pip as a man is played by Phillips Holmes; Estella, brought up to be a cold, heart-' less, ruthless gjrl, is played by Jane Wyatt. Miss. Havisham, Jaggers, Herbert Pocket and countless other characters are portrayed by ■well-known ac tors and actresses.
