Portraits Restored During the holiday recess the portraits which adorn the walls of the Wellington City Council Chamber have been restored and revarnished by Mr. A. Newrick, of Wanganui, and the pic- ! ture frames have been re-gilt. The work has had. the effect of brightening up the walls of the chamber. The latest additions to the portraits are enlarged i photographs of Messrs. D. McLaren and li. A. Wright in (heir robes of office as Mayor. Fall From a Trolley. Falling off ti trolley at Evans Bay yesterday, a schoolboy, Colin McCord, 8(5 Evans Bay Road, received a lacerated wound to liis scalp and concussion. I and was taken to the hospital by the Free Ambulance. Still on Holiday. Only two-thirds of the members of the Wellington City Council were present at yesterday afternoon’s special meeting. Councillors who were still away, in most cases on holiday, were Messrs. J. Burns, P. Fraser, 11. A. Huggins, L. McKenzie and R. Semple. Transport Licenses. The executive of the New Zealand Master Carriers’ Federation, at a meeting yesterday morning, passed the following resolution : —“That the New Zealand Master Carriers’ Federation commends the No. 2 Licensing Authority for the able manner in which it investigated the applications for route licenses, for its fearless interpretation of, the Transport Licensing Act, and also for the straightforward manner in which it has arrived at its decisions.” Pacilic Cable Damaged. The cable steamer Recorder sailed this week to carry out repairs to the Auckland-Norfolk Island portion of the Pacific cable. The cable is reported to have been damaged about 40 miles from Norfolk Island. The period the steamer will be absent from Auckland will depend on the amount of work to be done and the weather conditions. Extension of Western Hutt Road. The 'Wellington City Council decided yesterday to dedicate an area of its land at the George Memorial Park at Hayward’s, for the purpose of the extension of the Western Road in the Hutt Valley. The Mayor explained that there had been a conference with Hutt County Council representatives during the Holidays on the matter of fencing the new road at this point. The conference had agreed that the Hutt County Council should fence the northern side and the Wellington City Council the southern.
