First Catches of Season Fishing from tlie launch Valhalla tlie Rev. W. AV. Averill, of Auckland, eaught the first black marlin swordfish of the season. This fish fought very luird, and required an hour and a half to land, finally breaking the rod. It weighed 6681 b. zl mako shark was caught by Mr. Lloyd Averill. Ji mako shark weighing 4881 b. was caught by Mr. .Alma Baker fishing from the launch Reliance. The first black marlin of tbe season to be landed at Whangaroa was brought in by Mr. S. Ellis, of Hamilton, on Hie launch Reelemin. The marlin weighed 4991 b. A mako shark of 28S11>. was also secur’ed by Mr. Ellis. . Mr. Ellis had great sport with the swordfish, which proved a wonderful fighter. At one stage it was savagely attacked by a large mako, which made off after inflicting several large gashes near the tail of the swordfish
