NEED FOR HASTE

Wellington’s Centenary Celebrations “NONE TOO MUCH TIME” .Speaking at the annual reunion of the Early Settlers’ Association in Wellington yesterday, Mr. Byron Brown said the association should do sometiling in the way of endorsing the suggestion that the centenary of Wellington iu 1940 be marked by fitting celebrations. Mr. Brown said the association should urge upon all citizens the importance of getting to work with plans Tor the centenary without delay. The 100th year of Wellington was only five years away, leaving hone too much time for adequate preparations. Melbourne had put itself on the map for the whole world to see, and this was Wellington’s—and New Zealand’s — big chance to do the same. After quoting from that day’s issue Of “The Dominion,” setting put the story of Wellington’s growth as a city from 1840,. Mr. Brown remarked with pride that, we were now “some' people.” It was likely that 1940 would be observed as New Zealand’s year of foundation, and Wellington people ought, to take the initiative in the movement for recognition of the centenary. On his motion, seconded by Mr. Mark Maxton, the association resolved that all citizens of Wellington be urged to get to work without delay on a scheme for worthy recognition of the year 1940.
