ORCHARDS’ HARVEST

Feverish Rush of Fruit to Market RECORD DAYS AT TEVIOT Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, January 22. Teviot fruitgrowers on Saturday and Sunday last experienced one of the busiest ' week-ends in the history of fruitgrowing in this district. Never before has such a quantity of fruit been harvested at one time, and growers were working from daylight to well into the night picking it over and packing. Carriers were running day and night. One carrier alone had 4000 cases to shift, and he was working until 4 o’clock on Monday morning. The fruit comprised apricots, peaches and plums, and while the majority of the growers packed from 200 to 400 cases there were some who reached over 1000. The quantity railed was 153 tons 14 quarters, comprising 10,793 cases. The whole time from 9 a.m. on Sunday until 4 a.m. on Monday and from 6 a.m. to noon was occupied in loading cases into a train. This is a record for the station, the next highest quantity being 103 tons ITcwt. on January 23, 1933. This is the third occasion this season that the quantity railed on one day has exceeded 100 tons, and for the past fortnight it has never been less than 60 tons. The fruit was consigned to practically every market in the Dominion from Auckland to Bluff, and a large quantity also went to factories.
