AT TRENTHAM RACES

Holiday Crowd and More Colourful Dresses The first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s midsummer meeting, which took place a-t Trentham yesterday in real holiday weather, was a delightful beginning to its 1935 racing calendar. The lawn before the totalisator was packed with au eager and enthusiastic crowd long before the first race was started, and there seemed everywhere an atmosphere of good cheer and enjoyment. The brown hills were in strong contrast to the picture of spring they had presented at the special meeting for the Duke of Gloucester last month; but at least they were evidence of a long and unaccustomed spell of warm weather, and summer dresses were worn without fear of discomfort. Colour lias come back in some degree to women’s dresses, and wide hats gave a kaleidoscopic movement where the crowd was thickest. There were a few organdies, but floral georgettes and silks and suits of marocain and light woollens were the general wear. Red, white and blue is a popular mix-

ture in patterned fabrics, and navy and white still hold their own in combination. Dusky pink, so becoming and kindly a shade, is coming steadily to the fore; and spots of all sizes, from pin spots to coin dots, are rivalling checks and plaids. Trim lines and tailored severity have taken the place of flounces and frills to some extent, especially in the heavier and though lace is still lovely, it is not so much seen as last year.

Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe was in a charming gown of poplar-green georgette, made on soft graceful lines, witfr a small shirred hat fitting closely to her head, ajjd a large white fox fur on which was pinned a pale pink posy.
