AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Masterton Club Sports GOOD COMPETITION Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 22. Brilliant weather, excellent entries in all events, and a large crowd of spectators all combined to make the annual Anniversary Day sports conducted on the Masterton Park Oyal this afternoon by the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club an outstanding success. The track was in good condition, at first, but soon commenced to break up owing to the continued dry spell which has prevailed in the district for the past few weeks. Winning by only a few feet, W. J. Peterson provided the first notable finish of the day in the final of the men’s 100 yards handicap. The 100 yards women’s handicap also proved to be a good race, the three placed rhnners being separated by less than two feet, Miss M. Hack (Masterton) securing first position. Easily the most keenly-contested event of the day was the final of the 120 yards men’s handicap for the Messenger Memorial Shield. At the tape, barely six iuehes separated the first three men, R. Ball (Wellington) being the winner, with S. Pye (Masterton) second, and G. R. Gunn (Wellington) third. A good finish was also provided in the 120 yards women’s handicap, which was won by Miss T. Newman (Masterton), with Miss A. Gibbs (Featherston) second. In the 220 yards men’s handicap for the Welch Cup, presented in 1918 and to be won twice before being won outright, S. Pye (Masterton) secured ibis honour and thus retains the cup. Pye won this race last year and again today, and this year was successful in winning the Arthur Williams Memorial Shield, for the most points in all events. The various cycle events were well contested, eighteen riders participating in the two miles handicap, aud nineteen in the three miles handicap. In the halfmile cycle handicap final, five of the eight riders crashed through A. Dwyer falling on the bend, but fortunately no serious injuries were sustained.

At the conclusion of the programme, the various cups and trophies won were presented to the successful contestants as follows:—Arthur William’s Memorial Shield, for highest aggregate points: S. Pi - e (Masterton), 8 points, 1; W. J. Peterson, C. Wyeth (Masterton) and R. Ball (Wellington), 5 points each, equal, 2; Messenger Memorial Shield, 120yds. men’s handicap: It. Ball (Wellington).
