VINTAGE SETS NEW CUP RECORD

Opening Day of Wellington Summer Meeting LIMULUS WINS THE STAKES Wheriko’s Paralysing Run in Sprint Event ■ (By “The Watcher.”) The feature of the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at Trentham yesterday was the win of Vintage in the Wellington Cup. Burdened with 9.9, he was faced with the task of creating a fresh weight-carrying record for a cup winner at Trentham, but in a clean and true-run contest he won like a champion, in time which has only once been bettered. He also broke a long run of outs for cup favourites, the last first choice of backers .to succeed in this event having been Nobleman as far back as 1918. The opposition this year was probably not equal to what has ■ contested the race in the past, but Vintage is a really good horse, being up to weight and possessing speed and stamina. He was bred by his owner, Mr. D. W. Westenra, of Canterbury, and is by Shambles from Quality, a mare also bred by Mr. Westenra, by Clarenceux from Lady Majestic, by Majestic from Lady Melton, by Bill of Portland. He is trained by the Riccarton woman trainer, Mrs. J. Campbell, who is the first woman to train a Wellington-Cup winner, and is to be congratulated upon the condition in which Vintage was produced. Vintage gave A. E. Ellis his second winning ride in the Wellington Cup, he having been previously successful in 1924 on Loughrea.

The second leg of the double, the Telegraph Handicap, was won in brilliant and solid style by Wheriko. The merit of his performance was enhanced by the fact that he had to come right from the rear of the field. The interference met with in this race by the favourites, Diatomous and Princess Doreen, was unfortunate, and also costly; as they both appeared to be going well at the time, but this in no way- detracts from the merit of Wheriko’s success. Wheriko, who was bred at Orari by Mr. G. A. Kain, is an exceptionally well-grown gelding by Night Raid from Satisfaction, by Bezoniun from Satisfaire, by Birkenhead, and he was one of the high-priced yearlings of his year, being purchased by Mr. Eric Connolly, of Melbourne. He was very highly rated early in his career, but he failed to train on, as it was considered that his wind had become affected. He was passed on cheaply to the New Zealand trainer, A. D. Webster, who was successful in winning a race with him at one of the minor meetings in Victoria before bringing him back to New Zealand. His rise since then has been meteoric, as he has contested only four races, of which he has won the last three. His success yesterday definitely establishes him as a high-class galloper, with apparently very little the matter with his wind. Race for the Stakes. The classic event, the Wellington Stakes, provided a keen and exciting finish. It was won practically all the way by the three-year-old filly Limulus, from three others of the same age,..the two-year-olds suffering a complete eclipse. Limulus is by that great sire of speed, Chief Ruler, from Chelae, and is the first of the progeny of her dam, who was imported by Mr. J. Donald. Chelae is by Cyklon from Deneb, by The Welkin, and is a sister to Herowiukie, the dam of the crack Australian galloper, and Melbourne Cup winner, Hall Mark. Limulus was bought as a yearling by the late Mr. Vivian Riddiford, and was first trained at Trentham by S. J. Reid. She did not race from this stable, and when Mr. Riddiford gave up active participation in racing, she and Whyte Melville were the only two horses kept, and they were sent up to L. G. Morris at' Marton. Limulus had one race as a two-year-old, at the autumn meeting at Trentham. Her next start was at Feilding last November, when she was successful in maiden class. At her next start she ran second here on December 15 at the Royal Welcome meeting in the hack seven furlongs won by Tunpeller. From that, to the Wellington Stakes t would usually be considered a great step, but iu all her races Limulus has shown great speed, and steady improvement. She did not win yesterday in her old colours, having been purchased by Mr. T. A. Duncan at the Marton New Year fixture. She incidentally gave Mr. Duncan his first win in this event, and bred as she is, she should reach high class. R. Reed, who rode her, also won last year on Diatomous. The minor races provided keen contests, and the day’s sport all round was thoroughly enjoyable, the handy size of the fields lending itself to this end. The stable of Sir Charles Clifford, controlled by the brothers H. and A. Cutts, of Riccarton, won a double, being successful in the first race, and in the last, while the leading jockey, L. J. Ellis, also won two races. An inquiry was opened after the Telegraph Handicap into alleged interference met with by the favourites, Diatomous and Princess Doreen, and it was adjourned until to-morrow. Tho track and appointments were in excellent order, and the going perfect and fast. The day, so far as the weather was concerned, was all that could be desired, with the exception that a westerly breeze on occasions freshened. The attendance was very large, and the club maintained its promise to close the totalisator or. time, with the result that the public soon dropped into the requisite habit of betting early. Money was shut out on the early races, but matters in this respect improved as the day progressed. The totalisator turnover reached the satisfactory total of £44,36.1/10/-, of which the win pool claimed £10,003/10/-, and the place £25,358, as against £43,603 last Anniversary Day, which was the second day, an increase of £758/10/-. Knock Out Finishes Well. The Highweight was won very nieely by Knock put. She got out well and held a prominent position for a furlong or so, when she was allowed to settle down in about sixth or eighth position. From there she moved forward in the straight to cut down the leaders and win well. The running was made by The Ark and Round Score. The Ark took sole charge round the turn, to lead into the straight from Round Score, Palatinate, Wino, Red Rufus, Dombey, and Knock Out. Round Score headed The Ark at the last furlong, but Knock Out finished too strongly amj wore him down. The Ark was ft fair third, with Dombey finishing fast into fourth place, and then came Palatinate, Wino, Purse, and Tlaere Tonu.

a good race, but they both had every chance.- Dombey, however, may have been a trifle unlucky, as he lost a good position in the middle stages and finished fast. Bold Jim was very slow away and never showed up at any stage of the race. Two-yeai'-olij,s Eclipsed. The feature of the Wellington Slakes was the triumph of the older horses, all four places being filled by three-year-olds, while none of the two-year-olds made any showing, the favourite, Bun Fight, being in the ruck throughout. Limulus was always in front and going well, and led to the course proper, attended by Emissary, Burnish, Pakanui, and in behind were Mother Superior and Penelope. Once in line Limulus was kept well un to her work, and was holding Emissary, when Mother Superior finished with a brilliant run and just failed to reach her, while Variant also finished strongly, there being half-heads or' heads between the first five horses. It was a particularly good finish. After the placed horses came Penelope, Burnish, Bun Fight, Severe, Abdication, Pakanui, Colombo. The winner. Limulus, was recently purchased by Mr. T. A. Duncan from the estate of the late Mr. Vivian Riddiford. She has done very little racing, but what she did was most promising, and it was no surprise to find her holding her own .in.this class of event. Mother. Superior’s form was up to her best, which she recently showed at Auckland, and so was that of Variant. Both of these fillies would have been hard to beat with another furlong to go. Emissary showed a lot of pace, and was always dangerous, although he had had enough at the finish. Burnish improved and ran an excellent race,. but none of the others was good enough. Abdication, after playing up at the start, dwelt and lost ground, but he finished fast to beat several home. Palm All the Way. The Apprentices’ Plate was won very easily by Palm. She began best and led all the way. Nothing ever got near her. Hunting Bag was well placed in the running. finishing on well for second without having any chance with the winner, but he had to be shaken right up to keep in front of Fersen, who looked unlucky, for his rider failed to get him away on terms, and he had a lot of ground to make up at the half-mile. Palm won so easily that it may have made no difference. The rest of the field were too far behind at the finish to warrant any comment, but no doubt some of them will do better with stronger riders up, Hostis, for instance, being one of the slowest away and making no showing. Favourites Fail. ' The Fitzherbert Handicap saw the failure of a well-backed horse in Corroboree, but he struck trouble and was unlucky. He was so far back early in the race that he not only had no chance but was totally unable to show any form at all. Fulojoy led practically all the way, and had no difficulty in stalling off Nightlass and Alchemic, who had been with her in the running throughout. Fulojoy was well clear with a furlong to go, but she eased up and allowed Nightlass to run to half a length, only on sufferance, while Alchemic was a moderate third, with Kotou fourth, followed by Heritage and Corroboree. Fulojoy is a speedy filly, but it was a pity she was robbed of the opposition of Corroboree, who might have troubled her. Heritage, having his first race, was responsible for the trouble. He ran green and jumped away on top of Corroboree, badly damaging one of the latter’s coronets. It will keep him out of action for some time. Vintage Sets Record. Vintage won (he Cup like a champion, and not only established a new weightcarrying record, but also put up the second best time in the history of the race. He did not begin as smartly, as some of the others on account of sidling out as the barrier rose, .but he was quickly in a good position before any turns were encountered, and although the lightweight Cuddle made a race of it until inside the last furlong, the final stages saw Vintage clearly triumphant. The running order was Red Manfred froka Grand Jury and Spiral, followed by Rocket, Silver Sight, and Vintage, with Gay Marigold bringing up the rear. There was little change in the order until the back stretch, where Red Sun momentarily moved up, nnd, a little later Cuddle also put in a fast run, which took her up to near the leader. Cuddle finally took the lead off Red Manfred on the turn, and these two were followed by Spiral and Vintage, Grand Jury dropping back. The pace was then cracked on, and the others soon got left behind, the leading four horses drawing right away. Coming into the straight Red Manfred and Spiral were also doing their best, and the issue quickly resolved itself into a duel between Cuddle and Vintage. For about a furlong it was a good contest, but finally Cuddle weakened and Vintage ran on to win decisively. ■Spiral was a poor third, with Red Manfred fourth. followed by Silver Sight, Gay Marigold, Tout le Monde, Rocket, Red Sun. While all due credit goes to Vintage for a high-class performance, it must be admitted that on the form of the others they were on the day a moderate iot, Cuddle being the only one to give him any sort of a race. Spiral and Red Manfred ran fairly well, but they had every opportunity to do better, and Red Manfred failed to stay. The disappointment of the race was Grand Jury. Holding a perfect

Knoek Out steadily improved during the holiday racing, and, being by Winning Hit from Rivalry, she looks like reaching very useful form. She was particularly well handled by D. O'Connor, who was not in any hurry, and allowed her to settle down and brought her along at the right moment with an irresistible run. Round Score ran to form, and The Ark also ran

position for just about a mile, lie was then gone completely and finished last.

Kamal Pasha and Some Shamble. The hack sprint was won in handsome and solid style by the topweight, Beau Gallante, who, despite not having raced for nearly two years, put up a high-class performance. He drew 16, and was therefore not particularly favoured, but he was always prominent and leading on to the straight with Epris, State Bank, Cup Bearer and Moonbeam, he held his position despite strenuous challenges to win like a good horse. Epris was only just beaten and State Bank also ran a good race but the favourite Friesland was never sighted. After the placed horses came Tunneller, Brown Betty, and Travenna. Beau Gallante, a big, powerful gelding, won very impressively. Epris nearly brought off a sensational surprise and his dividend for second was easily the best of the day. Stale Bank showed great improvement. Wheriko’s Bold Finish. It was with a solid finishing run tint Wheriko won the open sprint, lor he was last, and a bad last, half way through the race when he and Guarantee were not only tailing the bunch but had daylight between them and the nearest of the leading division. However, when it came to racing over the last furlong he simply buried his opponents. Diatomous, Star Artist, Namakia, and Lucidus were always in a leading position with Autopay and Princess Doreen well placed. Diatomous and Princess Doreen met with interference leaving the false rail where Lucidus came through, but his reign was brief as he went under in turn to successive challenges. Autopay and Silver Streak loomed up as the most dangerous at the last furlong, but once Wheriko made his fun it was all over. Autopay beat Silver Streak just as decisively, the latter just catching Lucidus on the post for third money and then came Star Artist, Namakia and Guarantee. The interference was costly to Diatomous and Princess Doreen, but Wheriko’s finishing run from the rear was paralysing, and he-would have been hard to beat in any event. Autopay ran a solid race, and so did Silver Streak and Lucidus, While Star Artist and Namakia showed pace. A Stable Double. Fracas decisively beat the favourite Cherry King in the concluding event. This pair was always well placed following the leaders. Cardinal Moon, Cyclonic and Grejt Star, who ran abreast to the straight. Once in line the favourites moved forward, and although Cherry King briefly flattered, Fracas over the last furlong drew away from him without much trouble. Aiguille, who had been last in the running throughon*', moved up into a fair third, beating Cyclonic for that position, and then came K 'mal Pasha and Some Shamble. The winner won really well, and is back to the form which made her one of the leading two-year-olds of her year. Cherry King had every chance, although he must be credited with a good race, from which he may possibly improve. Aiguille, for a fresh horse, put up a good performance, but Cyclonic was rather disappointing, and there may be a tendency to over-rate this half-brother to Cylinder and Cypress, though he might be susceptible to improvement, as this was his first race since December 115 at the Royal Welcome meeting.
