The Flagpole Incident
Sir. —Concerning “Early _ History’s” uncertainty whether the cutting down of llaupole at Hororareka, afterward called llussell, occurred before or after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, I have pleasure in supplying the following dates: February 5. 184(1 signing of treaty; May, 1814, cutting down of flagpole; Febr'j.ary 28, 1864, the Gate Pa debacle. For fuller particulars of the above events. I recommend “Early His-, tory” to read “A Pioneer Missionary Among the Maoris, ISSO'-1579,” by d. 8. 'Grace. I have at the moment a very good book called "A Little History of New Zealand,” which gives a very good description of the above events, but as it was published in 1880 it may be hard to procure now. Perhaps any standard history of New Zealand would give the same particulars.—l am, etc., Levin, February 20.
