KISCH CONVICTED
Court Defers Sentence RULE NISI APPLIED FOR (Received January 21, 5.35 p.m.) Sydney, January 21. Egon Kisch lias been convicted of being a prohibited immigrant. Sentence was deferred until to-morrow. Following Kisch’s conviction by the police magistrate, Mr. Shepherd, application was made to Mr. Justice Evatt in the High Court for a rule nisi restraining Mr. Shepherd from proceeding further. Mr. Justice Evatt declined to deal with the application until the completion of the Police Court proceedings to-morrow. Mr. Justice Evatt, however, granted a rule nisi calling upon the proprietors and editor of the “Sydney Morning Herald” to show cause why they should not be committed for contempt of court respecting tlie publication of matter tending to prejudice Kisch at the recent Police Court proceedings. Argument, on this matter was adjourned till January 29 owing to the absence of the “Sydney Morning Herald’s” leading counsel.
