ULTIMATUM ISSUED
Action by Japanese at Jehol OBJECTION TO POSITION OF CHINESE TROOPS Shanghai, January 20. Fears of a Japanese invasion of Inner Mongolia have been renewed by the action of the Japanese military at Jehol, who have delivered an ultimatum to Chinese troops who occupy a small area outside the northern loop of the Great Wall, east of Kuyuan. z The Japanese authorities at Peking admit that Japanese and Manchukuo troops are concentrating on Western Jehol for the purpose of forcibly clearing out the Chinese unless the latter withdraw’, but they deny any intention of invading Inner Mongolia. Chinese officials declare that the Japanese action is unjustified as the territory is definitely a part of the Ciiahar Province, and, in any case there are no Chinese regulars there, only local militia. MANDATES IN PACIFIC League and Japan’s Rights Geneva, January 20. The I.eague Council has adopted the report of the Mandates Commission, including a request for further particulars from Japan regarding sums spent on tile equipment of ports in the mandated islands. The British United Press correspondent at Geneva states that no speaker at tlie council referred to Japan’s withdrawal from the League. This is taken to mean that Japan will continue to hold mandatory rights after leaving the League. DIET REASSEMBLES Policy Speeches to be Macle (Received January 21, 11.59 p.m.) Tokio, January 21.
