New Zealand's history is written by pioneers. whose exploits blaze each new episode. First the Maoris, a race of great navigators and warriors, dared an unknown ocean and drove their frail canoes, by sail and paddle, from Hawaiki to this Ao-tea-roa (Land of the Long White Cloud). Centuries later came the first Europeans, a gallant company of voyagers—Tasman, De Surville and Cook—whose discoveries opened the way for Empire-building. The modern era / dawned in 1840, when, on January 22nd, the first colonists, led by Colonel Wakefield, landed at Petone, now a suburb of Wellington, and founded the settlement that was to become the capital city of the Dominion.
